Organization's Motivation

Africa is the second largest continent in the world, comprising 17.89% of the world’s population. However, approximately a third of Africa’s population lives in extreme poverty. For people, especially children, living in under-served communities in Africa, this statistic is much worse. Research has shown that the extreme poverty rate in Africa stands at around 50% among the rural population, compared to 10% in urban areas. From dealing with multiple factors that reflect this data, such as lack of quality education, poor health awareness and literacy, unemployment, food inflation- which in Nigeria has risen from 9.20% in 2013 to 30.64% in 2023, causing hunger, and other factors, the teeming population in Africa continue to live in a constant battle for survival.

A Chance for Education

The picture is dire for children living in Nigeria for many reasons. One of every five of the world’s out-of-school children is in Nigeria, a figure that is as desperate as it is concerning. About 10.5 million children in Nigeria aged 5 -14 years are not in school, with a net attendance rate of only about 53%. The major contributors to these, including gender, geography, insurgency, and poverty, ensure the perpetuation of this education deprivation, especially in Northern Nigeria and among female children. Early child marriage, future shortage of skilled workforce, high levels of illiteracy, and high socioeconomic and dependency issues are some of the attendant social implications that make the education problem a social emergency.

Protection for the Children

Children are also the most vulnerable demographic to food insecurity. Of the 17 million people currently at risk of food insecurity, children make up 35.29% (6 million) of this figure, which has been driven by continued conflict, climate change, inflation, and rising food prices. Children affected by food insecurity face mental health issues, reduced learning and productivity, and the serious risk of mortality attributed to acute malnutrition, anaemia, and other chronic illnesses.

One of every six (6) children dies before the age of five in Nigeria. Nothing describes the depth of the health care problem for children as well as this high figure of preventable deaths among under-five children in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria.
